Hetalia Wiki

This page is dedicated to the canon familial relationships (biological, adopted, or otherwise) between characters. All of these have been either directly stated by Himaruya or are very strongly implied. Anything not listed on this page is NOT canon.

Confirmed Relations in the Hetalia☆Collezione

  • Veneziano, Romano, Seborga, and Genoa - Relatives (usually interpreted by fans as brothers)
  • Ancient Rome - Grandfather to Veneziano and Romano (likely Seborga and Genoa as well)
    • It should be noted that Rome is probably called grandfather by the brothers because he looks old, so he is more likely their father rather than grandfather, seeing as they have no parents ever mentioned. Similar applies with Germania.
  • Prussia and Germany - Brothers (the Collezione pages for both also lists "many others", which likely means the other German states such as Saxony and Bavaria, who also have sections in the Collezione and are stated to be brothers to Prussia, Germany, and "many others")
  • Holy Rome - Brother to Saxony, Bavaria, "and many others"
    • It should be noted that Holy Rome and Germany are NOT listed as being brothers. That was one of several mistakes in the original printing that was fixed/removed.
  • America and Canada - Brothers (specifically says sworn brothers; the phrase "sworn brother" refers to men who are either siblings by birth or who have sworn loyalty to each other)
  • France and Monaco - Siblings (specifically says sworn siblings; the phrase "sworn sibling" refers to people who are either siblings by birth or who have sworn loyalty to each other)
  • Switzerland and Liechtenstein - Siblings (specifically says sworn siblings; the phrase "sworn sibling" refers to people who are either siblings by birth or who have sworn loyalty to each other)
  • Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg - Siblings (specifically says sworn siblings; the phrase "sworn sibling" refers to people who are either siblings by birth or who have sworn loyalty to each other)
  • Estonia and Finland - Not confirmed to be related, but the "Family and Pets" section Estonia's page lists Finland as his friend, which is not done on any other page. On Finland's page Estonia also states that the relationship he has with Finland is like brothers and best friends, so they are have a familial relationship even if they are not actually related.
  • Malaysia and Singapore - Brothers, though it is claimed by Malaysia and Singapore pretends they aren't
  • Greece and Cyprus - Greece claims to be related to Cyprus, but it is unconfirmed
  • Turkey and Cyprus - Turkey claims to be related to Cyprus, but it is unconfirmed
  • Romania and Ancient Rome - Romania claims he is a descendent of Rome, though it was denounced by Romano in the manga and has not been explicitly confirmed by Himaruya

Other Confirmed Relations

  • Portugal and Spain - Stated to share an ancestor (unknown who, perhaps a personification of ancient Iberia, if Hima were to ever make one).
  • Germania, Austria, and Switzerland - Not stated directly, but a comic shows Germania thinking of Austria and Switzerland, alongside Germany and Prussia, as his family
    • Thus Switzerland and Austria are potentially related, or at least have the same father figure
  • Sweden and Sealand - Adopted father and son
    • It seems that Sealand also considers Finland a father figure as well.
  • Because Sealand is brothers with England and Seborga is related to the Italy brothers, it is thus very strongly implied that all micronations are related to their host country. While it is somewhat likely that the micronations are possibly the child of the host nation, because of the age differences of some, it is more often seen as the relations being siblings. So:
    • America, Molossia, and Slowjamastan - Brothers (some fans interpret America as a father figure, but as he is only physically 19 and these micronations are teenagers, this dynamic does not make sense)
    • Austria and Kugelmugel - Father and child or siblings. It is more likely they have a parent-child relationship due to their ages.
    • Australia, Hutt River, and Wy - Siblings. Some fans interpret Australia as a father figure, but as he is a very young adult and these micronations are teenagers, this dynamic does not make sense.
    • Canada and Aerican Empire - Brothers
      • This would also make the American micronations brothers to Aerica, because America and Canada are brothers.
    • Sweden and Ladonia - Father and son or siblings. It is more likely they have a parent-child relationship due to their ages, and because Sweden is an adopted father to Sealand, it makes sense Sweden views Ladonia as his son as well.
      • This also makes Sealand and Ladonia adopted brothers.
      • Ladonia also refers to Norway, Denmark, and Iceland as uncles.
  • The one exception to the above rule is Nikoniko Republic and Japan. Nikoniko and Japan are not related, as he was a regular human before he became a micronation, which is something that has never happened before. Likewise, it is also doubtful that Nikoniko's descendants are related to Japan.
  • China, Hong Kong, and Macau - Brothers or at least very strongly think of each other as brothers
    • Taiwan is less certain, but it is stated Macau thinks of her as a little sister and watches over her and Hong Kong
  • It is unknown for certain, but is possible, that Ireland is related to the other British isles countries, or at least to Northern Ireland
  • Magyar and Hun - Siblings. This would also make Hun Hungary's aunt or uncle.
  • Britannia and England - Mother and son; she is likely related to the other British Isles countries as well.
  • Italy Brothers and Vatican City - Potential Siblings (Vatican does not have an official design, but because all Italian states thus far have been confirmed relatives, if Vatican does get introduced he will likely be as well)
  • Persia - He is stated to have many children just like Rome does. This likely includes *Iran and other neighboring nations.
  • Other characters likely have parents or siblings who have not been designed yet.
  • Countries and their regions/states/prefectures - Because the German brothers are related to other German states, and the Italian Brothers are related to other Italian states, it is probable that other nations may have similar relationships to their own states.

Misconceptions

  • The use of the word "brother" or other familial terms to refer to another character does not inherently mean those two characters are related or view each other as family. Japan is one of many countries where familial terms are used as a sign of respect amongst friends or with a person who is older/younger than you. France, for example, calls himself the big brother of Europe because he wants to be looked up to, not because they are literally family.
    • It is different when characters say "I am your brother" or "You're like a brother to me" versus saying "Big Bro France is here" or " X is a Big Sis like character".
    • In the Halloween 2011 Overflow, Himaruya also states "By the way, the nuance of “Big Brother England” is here" after a comic with New Zealand, Australia, and England, with a link to a Japanese website that explains how brother/sister are used as an honorific title for older entertainers.
    • There are also several different words in Japanese that all translate to brother in English but mean very different things. For example, Denmark and Norway call each other "kyoudai" and "anko" respectively, which both can translate as brother (and are sometimes used by actual brothers), but their use is more often in a Yakuza/shield brother way and have a connotation more like "bro" or "best friend".
  • Some fans claim that France, Spain, and Portugal are descendants of Ancient Rome due to them all speaking Romance languages, but this is not canon. There is nothing in Hetalia that supports the idea that they are related to Rome: this has never been stated or implied by Himaruya or by any of the characters. The same goes for Germania with characters such as Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. Speaking a language in the same family does not mean characters are related to each other.
  • Some fans claim that Spain raised Romano during the period when Romano was living with him, and that they have a father-son or brothers relationship, but this is untrue. Spain was merely Romano's boss during this time.
  • It is a common thought among fans that America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are canonically England's siblings or children, but this is not stated by any canon material and is not listed in the Hetalia☆Collezione. This misconception comes from the fact that they have at one point all called him "brother" out of respect (not literally), and because they are former British colonies. However, it is important to note that being the colony of another country is not what makes characters in Hetalia related, and it is also historically insensitive to create a family dynamic out of imperialism.

Trivia

  • There is some debate of whether or not some characters, such as the micronations and their host countries, have a parent-child or sibling relationship. It is known that micronations are related to their host countries, but the exact relationships are not all stated. However, due to the human ages they are stated to look, it is most likely that those that are much closer in physical age, such as Molossia(teenager) and America (19), have a sibling relationship, whereas those that are a young child and an established adult, such as Kugelmugel and Austria, are more like parent and child.
