Prussia (プロイセン, Puroisen) is a secondary character in the series Hetalia. He is the personification of Prussia and East Germany, and he was born as the personification of the Teutonic Knights.
In 2007, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters and he received the name Gilbert Beilschmidt (ギルベルト・バイルシュミット, Giruberuto Bairushumitto).
Appearance
Chibi Prussia from Axis Powers Volume 4
Prussia is a young man of average height with a skinny build, light-colored hair and red eyes, though he first appeared with dark blond hair in early colored media. His hair varies between platinum blond, white, or silver, while his eyes have also been depicted as pink or a violet hue. His face and haircut have been described as asymmetrical.[11]
In modern media, he dresses in a more casual and vintage fashion.
According to Himaruya, although Prussia is older than Germany, he is shorter in comparison due to malnutrition.[12]
Personality And Interests
Prussia will do anything to become strong, and has an arrogant attitude, believing that he is the best and still more "awesome" than others, although he hasn't really succeeded at his goal. Although he proclaims to like being alone, he is seen crying when he sees Hungary and Austria together in the Christmas Rampage 2007 strips. It was stated that this loneliness stemmed from that he felt like an enclave rather than an actual nation. Germany once said that Prussia "knows little about common sense." Deep down, it is said that his true nature is that of a punctual and diligent soldier, though his bad manners (especially during his "transition period") mask it.
He is very loyal to his leaders, and had a special attachment to Frederich II, known to him as "Old Fritz". He continues to hope that Old Fritz will watch over him and that he'll be proud. It is said though, that he tends to become rather depressed if Fritz is brought up due to this attachment.
It is revealed that he had kept diaries since he was formed, which led to him having an entire library of journals. Almost all of them start with passages that read "I'm so cool/I was so cool today". He also seems to be fond of cute things, and buys things such as stuffed pandas, as seen on his April Fools Blog. In addition, on his blog, he says he's fond of sleeping, fighting, and eating, his fondness for eating being displayed in his going to England to eat lunch, him "only accepting" France's ability to cook well, and his desire to get food from Italy and Austria with his brother in their Counting Sheep CD.
He seems to have a tendency to sneeze and find himself bored with or distracted from tasks, especially reading, although he claimed to be "a wiz at cleaning" and also seemed to be good at gardening, so it's possible his skills show when he is less distracted. In his and Germany's Counting Sheep CD, after sneezing and growing bored of counting, Germany insists he continue to count, causing him to continue, also raising the possibility that he can continue to do things despite his own odds (boredom) if encouraged.
Biography
A lot of what is known about Prussia's life comes from the diaries he has been writing since the dawn of his existence.[5] Because of his arrogant and self-absorbed personality, he makes quite the unreliable narrator, which is something other Nations have sometimes pointed out by giving a more nuanced point of view on Prussia's past.
His bio from Axis Powers Volume 2 states that he was born to fight the same battles as Austria, but unlike him, Prussia managed to avoid marriages and did nothing but fight.[13]
An unrelated blog post[14] from 2016 gives a rough summary of his life from the time of his birth to the present day, lingering on his desire for a strong and unified German nation as well as his place within the Holy Roman Empire.
Teutonic Order
In Liechtenstein’s Doting Older Brother Journal,[5] it is mentioned that Prussia represented the Order of St. Mary before he became part of the Teutonic Order, but the earliest Prussia is properly seen in his history is during the Northern Crusades, representing the Teutonic Knights during his childhood/early teens.
He was given the territory of Burzenland by Hungary's boss (at the time Andrew II of Hungary) for his good services as a guard against the Cumans. However, because the Teutonic Knights disregarded the local bishopric's rights, Hungary got angry and kicked him out (events also featured or alluded to in Episode 53 and Episode 53.5). At the time, he was also obsessed with Christian precepts (especially since he was heavily supported by the Pope), which would get him in awkward situations with Hungary and Poland as he desperately tries to find out their gender. More on that in their individual relationship sections.
After that, he went on to work for Poland to defend against the neighboring pagans, marking the start of the Prussian Crusade. This would lead Prussia to relentlessly attack the freshly unified Grand Duchy of Lithuania with the goal of christianizing him (shown in Episode 92 adapting Eastern Europe While Totally Being Pushed Around by Poland![15]). These forceful attempts at conversion sparked a feeling of strong resentment in Lithuania, that he still holds against Prussia in modern times.[16]
Around the same period, driven by his lack of boundaries and hunger for power, he would go on to bully Russia, who was known back then as the Novgorod Republic, which leads to the Battle on the Ice (shown in Russia and Friends adapting the strip of the same name[17]). However, that battle ends with the Teutonic Knights' defeat, and Russia jumps on the opportunity to manhandle a weakened Prussia.
Prussia would then strain his relationship with Poland as well,[5] because of a territorial dispute similar to that of Burzenland which he ends up winning. Tension between Prussia, Poland and Lithuania would keep rising and eventually reach its climax during the Battle of Grunwald, where Poland and Lithuania (allied but not yet the single-state Commonwealth) defeat him thanks to a ruse from Lithuania (events of The Ruler of Scandinavia and the King of Eastern Europe and strip of the same name[18]). This battle killed most of the Teutonic leaders, and this defeat propelled the Teutonic Order into its decline.
With their reputation of "invincible warriors" tarnished, the Teutonic Knights progressively dwindled due to infighting, losing control over most of their territory. It is also from that point on that Prussia starts being referred to as such, instead of the Teutonic Knights.[Note 12]
Prussia
The next chronological event he appears in is the War of the Austrian Succession, which occured between 1740 and 1748. Now representing the Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia allies with France and Spain to challenge Habsburg power, under the pretense of questioning Maria Theresa's right to become the next ruler as she would be the first woman to do so. This is briefly shown in Episode 10 and more largely in Episode 64 and Episode 65 which adapt Maria Theresa and the War of Austrian Succession,[9] where Prussia sends Austria a letter threatening him to declare war if he is not given the Austrian region of Silesia. This would then lead to the Silesian Wars, which Prussia wins.
After this crushing defeat, Maria Theresa goes on to ask the Hungarian parliament for help, and ends up getting military assistance. Hungary shows up with her troops, determined to avenge Austria (continuing in Episode 65), and successfully fights off the Prussian invasion.
Due to divergence in interests between France, England and Austria, the Diplomatic Revolution occurs which would in turn lead to the Seven Years' War. England abandons his alliance with Austria (as seen in Episode 65), and Austria is forced to quickly find a new ally to withstand further Prussian offensives.
The events of the Diplomatic Revolution are alluded to in Maria Theresa and the Seven Years’ War,[19] in which Maria Theresa forces Austria to seek out new allies by sending them letters. To the shock or amusement of most European countries, France ends up swapping sides to become Austria's support instead of his foe, with Russia joining their side as well. Meanwhile, Prussia and his boss (Frederick the Great) decide to form an alliance with England. However, despite Frederick's ability to put up a decent fight against his opponents, the conflict would stall for a while and end on a draw, but Prussia still acquired the status of European superpower thanks to the House of Hohenzollern.
Prussia technically was involved in the Napoleonic Wars, but he is never properly shown during that time period in Hetalia aside from a brief mention in Awesome Me's Biography[20] as well as a blog post[14] from 2016.
Shortly after losing to Napoleon, Prussia supposedly witnesses the death of Holy Roman Empire. True to his big brother nature, Prussia was shown taking HRE under his care as he grew weaker, entertaining him with music[21] and fairytales.[22] World☆Stars Chapter 187[22] reveals that HRE had been hiding at Prussia's place even though he should have been dissolved and that his time of death was near, but what exactly happened past this point is unknown. This leads to the German Wars of Unification, which culminate in 1871 with the creation and "birth" of Germany (as the German Empire; shown in The Life of the Great Man, the Awesome Me which adapts Awesome Me's Biography,[23][24] as well as in World☆Stars Chapter 12[10]).
This marks a new start for Prussia as an older brother, as he is now in charge of Germany and guards him from the hardships the latter faced right after his creation.[10] For more information, see their relationship section.
WWI and WWII
Prussia did not appear during major events of WWI or WWII, save for a section of Brother! We Are…!! (adapting the strip of the same name[25]) where he teaches Germany how to disguise himself as an American soldier in order to cause confusion among enemy troops. This might be referencing the real-life Operation Greif.
He does however show up in slice of life strips taking place during WWII, judging by the uniform he wears (though whether or not that content actually takes place circa WWII is uncertain, as characters used to be drawn in WWII-era uniforms by default and it could just be a matter of character design consistency). Such content includes Episode 79 adapting Salted Salmon, Germany, and I[26], parts of Brother! We Are…!! (and strip of the same name[25]) and The Life of the Great Man, the Awesome Me adapting Awesome Me's Biography.[27]
East Germany
After the abolition of Prussia in 1947, he became East Germany[2] and fell under Russia's rule. Content depicting him in this time period is rather scarce, but he was shown during his stay at Russia's house a couple times. While Latvia and Estonia are happy to meet him, with the former even inviting him for dinner,[28] Lithuania merely reinstates that he doesn't like Prussia and warns him about Russia's personality.[29][16] While living at Russia's house, Prussia still attempts to communicate with others, namely sending a letter to Austria that was heavily censored by Russia.[28]
Prussia has naturally been on the receiving end of Russia's overbearing and behavior,[30] just like the other occupants of the house (the Baltics and Moldova, though the latter eventually warms up to Russia). For more information, see their relationship section.
Modern Era
After the German reunification, Prussia moved back in with Germany (formerly West Germany) with his modest possessions.[2] Despite what he has been through and his dislike for Russia, he still experiences ostalgie (meaning nostalgia for East Germany).[1]
In response to a fan question[16] about whether or not Prussia will disappear, Himaruya said that Prussia would be living with Germany and not do much for a while, but would be happy to disappear knowing that Germany inherited his knowledge and awesomeness. While it remains unsure what Prussia's status is in the present day and what his future as a Nation holds, it has been shown that some of his supernatural abilities are faltering, namely how fast his wounds heal.[21]
Relationships
Austria
- Main article: Austria
Prussia takes pleasure in annoying and humiliating Austria in whatever way he can, and fought against him in wars in the past, seizing Silesia for himself in the War Of Austrian Succession (the strip of which contained Austria saying the infamous "vital regions" line).
On numerous occasions, he finds himself alone and crying. Prussia will mention that he is happy alone unlike a certain "stupid aristocrat". In the Christmas Strips, Prussia has to tell himself that he would rather be alone than with others "because clustering is for the weak. Yeah, like that stupid aristocr--". Prussia often speaks negatively of Austria.
In the present day while living with his brother, Prussia freeloads off of Austria and has a habit of stalking him. Also, in Prussia's blog, it is implied that either Prussia and Austria are both living together in Germany's house, and that Austria hangs around the brothers very often to sort out their messes and spends a large fraction of his time with them. In the Maria Theresa arc of the anime, Prussia often attempted to make Austria beg for mercy during the battle. He also mentioned wanting a painter to come and paint Austria's face after he had lost the first battle, so that his failure could be etched into history.

Germany and Prussia in Brother! We Are…!!
From the moment Germany was born, Prussia took care of him like he did with Holy Roman Empire. World☆Stars Chapter 12[10] shows Prussia stepping in as an older brother figure to Germany after his creation as the German Empire, seeking to protect him from adversities and help him grow into a strong, unified German nation (which was Prussia's lifelong wish).
Although both brothers consider themselves to be completely different from each other (which is true in some aspects), other characters like Austria, Italy Veneziano and Japan note a lot of similarities in their behaviors, as shown in The Life of the Great Man, the Awesome Me which adapts Awesome Me's Biography,[27] and Brother! We Are…!! adapting the strip of the same name.[25]
Germany is mostly annoyed by his brother's boisterous attitude and his tendency to buy strange things, as seen in the April Fools' blog event and drama CD. Prussia refers to their familial tie as "unsavory". It's revealed, in his and Germany's Counting Sheep CD, that he does find himself wanting to do "big brother" things for him, sometimes.
Holy Roman Empire
- Main article: Holy Roman Empire
In Awesome Me's Biography,[23][24] Prussia is said to stand out as a big brother figure to HRE among the barely unified German states. Not much interaction is shown between Prussia and HRE until the latter's end of life, where Prussia takes him in and entertains him while HRE is bedridden.[21][22] Although World☆Stars Chapter 187 clearly states that HRE's death is near because of his effective dissolution, it is unknown what exactly happened to him and whether or not Prussia bore witness to it.
Prussia holds the same fondness and pride for Germany, whomst in recent years has been confirmed to be the same person as HRE despite not having retained any of his memories.
Hungary

Prussia and Hungary in 53.5
The two have had a rivalry since childhood, when Hungary believed herself to be a boy (as did Prussia). It is said that she loathes Prussia due to him making fun of her hardships since that time. She is also known to hit him with her frying pan when she catches him bothering Austria and had appeared at his bedside fully armed with a spear to threaten him to give back Silesia after he had seized it.
Prussia had also noticeably groped Hungary when they were children, though he was unaware of her true gender at the time and simply thought he'd grabbed a weak spot. After realizing the truth, he became disgusted and upset that he might have committed a sin and was utterly horrified by his actions. His realization led him to confessing his "sin" in a chapel and begging God for forgiveness.
Italy Veneziano
- Main article: Italy Veneziano
Prussia is shown to like Italy very much, often referring to him as Ita-chan (a cutesy nickname) in Japanese, considering him cute[31][16] and even going as far as to ask him on a date in the drama adaptation of his blog event,[32] only for Italy to be oblivious to his question.
Prussia's April Fools' The Blog of My Awesomeness shows multiple accounts of him interacting with Italy with more or less intent[31] (he gets excited at going to Italy's place for dinner, says that it'd be way cooler to have a blog together with Italy, and even states that Italy could stay over at his place for as long as he wants). Similarly, in the track from Hetalia Drama CD Interval Vol. 1: The Awesome Me CD based off of the blog,[33] he gets excited that Italy is his very first commenter, stating that "one comment from Italy is worth more than 100 comments from other people".
When choosing Italy's route in Cleaning Mr. Prussia, it is said that Prussia has "clear ulterior motives". Upon arriving, Prussia finds Italy sleeping (something typical of him at 9AM on a Sunday), and begins to stroke his head, saying that it felt like the Risorgimento. As he does so, he daydreams about him and Italy together on a gondola in Venice, with Italy dressed as a gondolier.[34]
However, Italy doesn't seem to return any of these feelings. During the Christmas 2011 Event,[35] Italy comments with embarrassment that Prussia was "quite a free spirit" in his youth, and he recalls hearing Prussia boasting about himself a lot, which doesn't impress him. Italy also adds that Prussia hasn't changed since then.
Japan
- Main article: Japan
While their only canonical meeting was in Prussia's Cleaning game, in which he helps him clean after Japan misinterpreted his demands as enthusiasm, Himaruya has stated that their relationship is near inseparable, and that it was something he wanted to show in Prussia's April Fools blog but didn't get to. It's also notable, that Japan calls him "Prussia-kun", emphasizing this. Prussia possibly goes to Japan's house very often, as he said that he "usually" has tea and manjuu when he goes. When they finished cleaning, to show his gratitude, Japan gave him the cakes he had previously been asking for, however the work exhausted Prussia, so he could "only" eat 34. To date, their most notable anime interaction together is when Prussia asked Japan for help finding a pine tree for Christmas and Japan, not having any pine trees, decided to give Prussia his treasured bonsai tree; something that Prussia found endearing enough that he wasn't able to take the bonsai.
Also stated in the game, was Prussia's enjoyment of reading manga (he had attempted to learn to make his own, but he sneezed and abandoned the project), something he possibly got from befriending Japan.

Lithuania being attacked by Prussia (Teutonic Knights) in Episode 92
Because of his unpleasant past encounters with Prussia as the Teutonic Knights, Lithuania holds a stubborn grudge against him that doesn't seem to falter even centuries later.[16] Prussia's forceful attempts at converting Lithuania to Christianity seems to be the only reason for that grudge, even though it is ironic considering he then peacefully converted when allying with Poland against their common enemy.
Still, Lithuania was shown to act in a very cold and even condescending[29] manner around Prussia during their time living together at Russia's mansion, even when Prussia tried helping Lithuania with paperwork in good faith. Prussia never adresses the tension (nor the reason behind it) directly, but he obviously feels hurt by Lithuania's behavior.
In a strip from the Halloween 2013/2014 Event,[36] he pretends to have forgotten Lithuania's and Poland's names, but still ends up helping Lithuania with finding Poland, further proving that the centuries-old grudge is one-sided.
Poland

Poland and Prussia (Teutonic Knights) in Episode 53
Poland and Prussia have known each other since the Northern Crusades. After being kicked out by Hungary due to his power-hungry behavior (after he tried to claim Burzenland for himself), Prussia ends up working for Poland.[5] Extremely preoccupied by Christian dogmas at the time, Prussia wants to find out Poland's gender to ensure he's not a girl.[Note 13] This leads to an absurd situation (recalled during the Christmas 2011 Event[35]) where Prussia asks a confused Poland to touch his genitals for confirmation, which Poland strongly declines, affirming he's not a girl. Prussia ends up chasing Poland around insistently, under Hungary's bewildered watch. Hungary herself also wound up on the receiving end of Prussia's invasive questions as he was also thrown off by her androgynous looks.[5]
Their relationship would end up strained with the Teutonic Knights aiming to claim more and more of the land they were appointed to defend against, and the two started to argue with each other.[37] Those tensions grew steadily and culminated at the Battle of Grunwald, where Prussia nearly defeated Poland and having threatened to kill him until Lithuania intervened and defeated the Teutonic Knights after having pretended to flee. Much later, Prussia (now an independent kingdom) played a major role in the Partitions of Poland.[Note 14]
It is unclear what their feelings towards one another are in the present day. In a strip from the Halloween 2013/2014 Event,[38] he pretends to have forgotten Lithuania's and Poland's names, but still ends up helping Lithuania with finding Poland.

Prussia's cameo in Episode 10
In the anime, his hair was changed to a silver shade of platinum blond, and his eyes are a deep red. From Hetalia: The Beautiful World onwards, his eyes have more of a pink/violet hue.

Name
The name Gilbert is actually of Norman-French origin, and it has never been particularly popular in Germany compared to other countries. It remains rare to this day, and feels very archaic.
Prussia's surname was initially rendered as Weillschmidt in different English fanworks. Beilschmidt was later found to be a more accurate reading, as it is an actual German surname compared to the non-existent Weillschmidt, which slowly fell into disuse. The surname comes from the German words beil ("axe") and schmidt ("smith"). Inspiration for the name may have been the East German jumper Rolf Beilschmidt.

Trivia
The prototype Teutonic Knight design
- An old sketch by Himaruya depicted a much different representation of the State Of Teutonic Knights. Instead of a younger Prussia, the Teutonic Knight has long, dark hair and a beard.
- His info page from the Axis Powers Volume 5 special booklet[11] reveals that he was initially meant to be a more villainous-looking character, but turned out goofier over time.
- In a production note, Himaruya stated that he also initially designed a Prussia that looked more like a long-haired Poland, and that his personality was to be a lot more mature and pitiful.[citation needed]
- The flag used to represent Prussia is that of the Kingdom Of Prussia, which lasted from 1701 to 1918. However, it is worth noting that the use of this flag in modern-day settings should be avoided, as it is a very widespread dog whistle for neo-Nazi groups in Germany. A good alternative would be the flag of East Germany.
- For similar reasons, the use of the Iron Cross and other loaded symbols should be avoided in modern-day context.
- In Prussia's introduction from the April Fools' The Blog of My Awesomeness, Prussia says that his blood type is "A in majority".[31]
- Prussia was confirmed to be left-handed,[39] but he was mistakenly drawn writing a book with his right in Buon San Valentino.[40]
- Prussia can play the transverse flute.[21]
- In 2010, Prussia starred in the online mini-game Cleaning Mr. Prussia, in which he cleaned the homes of various characters. In response to questions raised by a line of dialogue during Germany's good ending,[41] it was clarified that Prussia is a "retired" nation that passed on his skills and traits to Germany and may in fact disappear and die out over time.[citation needed]
- Although it is widely believed that he was voiced by the seiyū Subaru Kimura, no one was credited for the role of Prussia in the Episode 10's ending credits, and it was later revealed that Atsushi Kousaka had actually voiced him (doing an impression of Kimura's voice for Gian, from the series Doraemon). According to a Comic Birz interview, Hidekaz Himaruya approved the casting of Prussia, having anticipated that Kousaka would fit the character.
Notes
- ↑ There are numerous indications of this in canon material for this, though the cited sources are two of the most explicit. Mentioned in the first source, ostalgie is a combination of Ost (East) and Nostalgie (Nostalgia) and refers to feeling nostalgic for life in East Germany. Click here for more information. In the second source, Prussia is pictured with a Trabant, which was an East German car. Click here for more information. Another piece of canon evidence is the fact that he was forced to live with Russia following World War II. Also, he refers to Germany as "West".
- ↑ A sentence in the sourced page lends evidence to the idea of him being the Kaliningrad Oblast, as it is mentioned that he had become an enclave of Russia (though it is also said in the same sentence that he lives with his brother).
- ↑ The exact source for where Himaruya said this is currently lost. His name was not given in the list with most of the others.
- ↑ He is older than Germany, who Himaruya stated to be 20 in the cited source.
- ↑ Most notably towards Italy Veneziano (whom he is very fond of and asked on a date) and Hungary (though it is unknown if he genuinely ever had romantic feelings for her or just past attraction).
- ↑ He has never been given an official birthday, but in the World Wide Walking Animation Fanbook it was listed as January 18, which corresponds with the foundation date for the Kingdom Of Prussia in 1701.
- ↑ He usually says "oresama" rather than just "ore", which has a more arrogant nuance.
- ↑ The German States, such as Saxony, Bavaria, and Hesse.
- ↑ This is not stated on Prussia's profile, however it is said on Austria's that Germany and Prussia are his cousins, so the reverse is also true.
- ↑ The small yellow bird that is often seen with Prussia. It is unknown what type of bird it is meant to be, but common some fan interpretations are a canary or a chick. The bird also has not been given a name, but much of the English-speaking side of the fandom call it "Gilbird", a play on Prussia's human name, Gilbert.
- ↑ Mechanical engineering is one of the top German industries, and Germany is famous for it.
- ↑ Prussia most likely represented Teutonic Prussia specifically, since it is an overlap between geographical Prussia and the military Teutonic Order. It would also explain why he did not disappear together with the Knights. Click here for more information.
- ↑ The Catholic Church encouraged men to live a chaste life, which partially meant having minimal interaction with women (as they were considered the cause of men's sinful desire).
- ↑ Prussia is never shown doing so on-screen (as only the last battle lost against Russia is featured in Episode 57 and Pact of Steel), but the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was split between Russia, Prussia and Austria-Hungary.
