|
This page contains explanations and further context about certain outfits that Poland has worn, including military uniforms, cultural clothing, Halloween costumes, and so on. Some information has not been directly stated by Hidekaz Himaruya, but has instead been deduced by fans; any speculation will be specified. Changes made in adaptations, such as the anime, is noted when applicable.
Chibi Poland from Axis Powers Volume 4
Military Outfits[]
Medieval Battle Attire[]
Card No. 51 (The World-6 - Poland & Lithuania) from the 2008 TCG depicts Lithuania and Poland in battle attire from the 15th century.[1][Note 1] However, it seems like the exact inspiration behind Poland's battle attire is unknown; it is possibly historically inaccurate.
Early WWII Uniform[]
In earlier artwork, Poland was depicted in a green jacket with 3/4-length sleeves, green breeches, and tall tan boots, with a matching hat as an accessory. Two notable pieces of artwork with this uniform are an early Polonia sketch[2] and his first webcomic profile chibi.[3]
It appears that Himaruya abandoned this uniform in favor of the later one, though a chibi version of Poland wearing that uniform appears on the cover of Hetalia: Axis Powers: Sound World, where it is colored tan presumably due to a production error.
Another lined draft for his military uniform design exists, but could not be traced to its original source.
Signature WWII Uniform[]
This uniform is very similar to the first one, except that Poland wears a short green capelet over his jacket and appears to have dark gaiters. He also wears black gloves. This uniform seems to be inspired by that of the Podhale Rifles.
An early fullbody drawing of Poland in uniform includes an unused color scheme (referred to as 2P colors), which is colored blue instead of green. Though Poland has appeared in this uniform in most merchandise, he has yet to actually wear either military uniform in-series.
Other Military Outfits[]
In a tweet[5] from 2020, Himaruya showed different color schemes he was considering for Poland's uniform, which also showcased a new uniform. This time Poland is wearing a double-breasted jacket on top of a shirt and tie, dress pants and brown shoes. His capelet is significantly longer (the capelet and the black cap are reminiscent of an early draft of his design shown above), and its collar is adorned with a little emblem as well as a ribbon representing the Polish flag.
Himaruya also noted in a blog post[6] from 2010 that he'd like to draw Poland at some point wearing a uniform with collar details similar to those of the Polish army.
Formal Wear[]
Modern Uniform[]
Cover of World☆Stars Volume 8[7]
In recent years, Himaruya has been stepping away from drawing the characters in the WWII uniforms they were previously known for, partially due to the fact that most strips from Hetalia: World☆Stars (manga) take place in modern times.
On the cover of World☆Stars Volume 8 as well as World☆Stars Chapter 481,[8] Poland can be seen wearing something very similar to his previous military uniform (with the same kind of capelet), except this one is white with golden accents.
It seems like he and the Baltics are wearing something akin to diplomatic uniforms, judging by the similar golden ornate embroideries and trimmings, the insignas on their sleeves and/or collar lapels, and an aiguillette in Lithuania's case. However, it is worth noting that modern-day Poland does not use diplomatic uniforms anymore.
World Meeting[]
In the published story Meeting Of The World,[9] (adapted in Episode 01), Poland wears an orange sweater over a white dress shirt and green tie, along with a pair of tan pants. In the scrapped webcomic version[10] of the same event however, he instead wears a dark jacket over a white dress shirt and has his hair tied back into a ponytail.
In The Weirdos・Part 1, he can be seen in the crowd wearing an emerald green suit over a white dress shirt, and a pink tie. He does not appear in the comic strips adapted in that episode.
Traditional Clothing[]
Merry Friends and Folk Costumes![]
In the Axis Powers Volume 4 special booklet,[11] Poland gets his own page revealing him wearing a costume typical of Polish Gorals.
He wears that same outfit in a full illustration of him and Lithuania from Axis Powers ArteStella.[12]
Signature Folk Costume[]
This outfit appeared consistently throughout the comics, the anime as well as miscellaneous artwork by Himaruya, and it is probably the most recognizable one. It consists of a white blouse with puffy sleeves and embroidered red floral patterns (a combination reminiscent of the Polish flag), along with a flower-adorned red bolo tie, red puffy pants tucked in tall boots, and a brown sash at the waist. A brown capelet with similar red accents and a ribbon tie completes the look.
Young Poland from the Children's Day artwork series[13] dons this exact outfit, minus the capelet.
He wears something similar in a drawing[14] posted on Himaruya's Twitter account to announce the upcoming release of Hetalia: World★Stars (anime), along with a white, gold-trimmed vest and a black (probably felt) hat. This style of embroidery running down to mid-chest might be referencing folk costumes of the Sącz Lachs.
Other Folk Costumes[]
Another fullbody drawing of him shows yet another outfit, featuring a long-sleeved brown tunic with an intricate collar and red accents, a red bowtie, a tall golden belt with white tassels, an white gold-trimmed pants. A black felt hat dangles at the back of his head, and he is wearing dark brown kierpce.[Note 2] Unfortunately, that drawing could not be traced back to its original source.
His page from Poland/Uniform Guide#Merry Friends and Folk Costumes! also mentions that what he wears in Axis Powers Volume 3 strips (as well as in Episode 95 adapting those strips) is a kontusz, a garment typical of the Polish-Lithuanian nobility.
Cross-Dressing[]
Poland has also been shown to occasionally cross-dress, as previously mentioned in the Gakuen section. This aspect of his character has become very well-known, although Himaruya quickly toned it down (even deleting a sequel strip from the Christmas 2007 Event where he appears in a skirt).
Poland in Extra Episode 2
In the Halloween 2006 Comic,[16] Poland appears in a sleeveless maid dress and wears a bow in his hair. Due to the comic being in black and white, it is unknown what color the dress might be. However, in Extra Episode 2, it is depicted as being pink with black trimming.
Poland in the deleted Christmas 2007 sequel[17]
He later appears in the deleted follow-up to the Christmas 2007 Comic[17], wearing a skimpy Santa-style outfit. It consists of a Santa hat, gloves that go past the elbow with white fur trim, a crop top with a white rabbit-head accent and a white pom-pom, and suspenders attached to a skirt with two rabbit-heads on it. It can be assumed that the entire outfit is red and white, to go with the Christmas theme.
He can also be seen wearing a skirt in the Mochi & Bun[18] bonus strip from the Halloween 2013 Event, and a frilly dress in a request doodle[19] from 2014.
Event Outfits[]
Cat Day 2015[]
In a blog post[20] from 2015, Himaruya answered a fan request with a drawing of Poland with cat ears, paw gloves and a cat tail. His outfit seems to be themed around tailoring and sewing supplies (big buttons, what looks like a thread bobbin and scissors hanging from his waist, as well as patterns similar to a measuring tape on his vest); however, the exact inspiration behind this costume is unknown.
Christmas Outfits[]
2007 (Deleted Sequel)[]
Refer to the Cross-Dressing section above.
2010 (Cats & Christmas)[]
In the Christmas 2010 Event,[21] Poland briefly appears wearing a long-sleeved Santa top decorated with two pompoms, a fur-lined cape, and matching fur-lined shorts. He also wears a headband with long animal ears, though it's unclear what animal exactly it is supposed to be.
Other Christmas Outfits[]
Poland has appeared in many miscellaneous Christmas-themed doodles dressed in Santa outfits, shown below.
Halloween Costumes[]
2006 (Maid Dress)[]
Refer to the Cross-Dressing section above.
2011 (Fairytales and Folklore)[]
In the Halloween 2011 Event[25] (adapted in Surprise Halloween!), the characters were split into different groups, each themed around fairytales or local folklore. Poland was grouped with Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, and their theme was Alice in Wonderland. Poland was very excited to dress up as "the prince",[26] even though there is none in most popular versions of the story. His costume was said to be inspired by 16th century nobility.[27]
2014 (Various)[]
Poland briefly appears during the Halloween 2014 Event.[28][29] He is dressed in a full teddybear suit, which causes Russia to confuse him with an actual plushie.
However, a separate sketch from a blog post[30] about themed costumes shows him dressed up as a cupcake. The inspiration for this specific costume is unknown, since it doesn't follow the general theme of the others (ghosts, and more specifically maid/butler ghosts).
2024 (Not-so-scary Monsters)[]
For Halloween 2024, Himaruya drew a series of characters dressed up as monsters from their local folklore, but with a non-threatening twist, hence the name "not-so-scary monsters" (あんまり怖くないモンスター, anmari kowakunai monsutā). Poland's costume is based on Toruń gingerbread, a traditional Polish pastry.
Alternate Universes[]
Gakuen Hetalia[]
Though he does not appear in the demo or the unfinished screenplay of Gakuen Hetalia (game), Poland appears alongside Lithuania in concept art where he is shown wearing the winter uniform with a blue sweater and carries a pink plushie backpack.
A later sketch[32] shows him with a light-colored sweater and the same kind of backpack. Said sketch was a reply to a blog commenter asking why Lithuania is so busy that he fails to attend the Choir Club most of the time.
Due to a gag doodle drawn at the end of the Checkmating Poland[33] strip (in which Poland is shown wearing the school uniform with a skirt; also featured in Episode 97), there was debate as to whether he wears pants or a skirt with the Gakuen uniform. However, Himaruya stated in a blog post[34] from 2008 that he wears the boy's uniform.
Hetalia Fantasia[]
Poland appears in Hetalia Fantasia 3 as well as miscellaneous blog posts related to the Fantasia universe.
On the cover of the drama CD, he wears something very similar to his Halloween 2011 costume; it is worth noting that the drama CD released around the same time, meaning Himaruya possibly got the same inspiration for both outfits. His Fantasia outfit consists of a white top with puff sleeves, white gloves, black Spanish breeches, white cavalier boots (informally called "pirate boots") and a pink cape.
Nyotalia[]
See Poland's section on the Nyotalia page.
Miscellaneous[]
These are leftover outfits that did not fit into any other category.
