Nekotalia originated from a strip in Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3 and several images and other comics by Hidekaz Himaruya in which the nations have cats that share similar personalities and features to them. These cats appear to be owned by the nations they represent and they all are referred to with "cat" following their nation's name, seemingly to have them represent the nation as well. The term Nekotalia derives from neko, the Japanese word for "cat" and talia, from Hetalia, the name of the base series. Fans often refer to them as neko [nation name]. The cats are somewhat comparable to Mochi, in that they are alternate versions of characters that also exist in the main universe. It is not said what breeds each cat is, but fans have speculated ideas based on their appearances.

Most of the Nekotalia designs come from a single blog post of Himaruya's, which was then used for the basis of the eyecatches in the Nekotalia Once Again[1].

America-cat[]

America Cat

America-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

America-cat is a large white cat (though he appears more yellowish in the anime) with blue eyes, thin semi-circles beneath his eyes to represent America's glasses and long, dark fur around his neck that resembles the top of America's bomber jacket. When Finland was asked to take pictures of the Allied Forces cats, he described them as being free and uncontrolled, saying they were "next to impossible" to get pictures of. In the photo Sweden had already taken, America-cat appeared to be inside of a house with a ball about as big as he was, indicating that he might live with America[2]. In his initial appearance in The Summary of the Plot until Now, he was drawn with a cowlick, leading the beginning of the "World Cat Conference" and meowing a lot[3]. Similar to his human counterpart, America-cat is incredibly bold and claims to be the closest friend to other country cats. However, he is helpful to others as he once tried to help China-cat overcome loneliness. It is speculated that his breed is most likely either a Ragamuffin, a Maine Coon, or a mix of both.

Austria-cat[]

Austria Cat

Austria-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Austria-cat is a dark gray colored cat (appearing somewhat blueish in his colored illustrations thus far) with a white face and white paws. In the manga and World Series, the tip of his tail is also white, though his tail is solid gray in World Twinkle and other illustrations. His fur appears to be somewhat long, especially at his chest and the back of his head. Like Austria, he has a cowlick, and he has dark spot on his face similar to Austria's mole. He also has purple eyes and wears an Austrian flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck. According to Germany-cat, they look like they act similar, however, Austria-cat is easygoing and they're not like one another at all. Still, Austria-cat seems to be a bit delicate and high maintenance like Austria himself, saying he wants to be a house cat because he doesn't want his paw pads getting dirty. According to himself, Austria-cat could not be seen in public after just having woken up due to his breed, suggesting he may be, or believes himself to be or carries himself as though he is, a purebred cat. Nonetheless, he didn't seem to have a problem with Germany-cat seeing him that way. It is speculated that his breed is a German Rex.

Belarus-cat[]

Belarus Cat W.S

Belarus-cat in Episode 83

Belarus-cat wears a ribbon atop her head, light purple/grey fur, and dark circles around her eyes, which are yellow in the anime. She appeared in the bottom corner of the strip in which Russia-cat went to befriend the Italy-cats, staring at them with wide eyes, presumably in an aggressive manner. Possibly similar to Belarus with Russia, she seems very fond and possessive of Russia-cat as she did not like seeing the Italy-cats around him. Her breed is unknown, but it does not seem like she is the same breed as Russia-cat or Ukraine-cat, though she very well could be.

Canada-cat[]

Canada Cat

Canada-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Canada-cat looks very similar to America-cat, with the same lines under his eyes to symbolize glasses and dark fur around his neck. Although he appears somewhat smaller than America-cat and has a whiter coat and his trademark hair curl strand. In the anime, his eyes are violet. Canada-cat is very similar to Canada in that he speaks in a calm and soft tone and is generally polite to others. It is speculated that his breed is most likely either a Ragamuffin, a Maine Coon, or a mix of both.

China-cat[]

China Cat

China-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

China-cat is a dark-furred cat with brown eyes and a long strand of fur around the back of his head that is noticeably separate from the rest of his fur and often hanging down over his back, similar to China's ponytail. When Finland was asked to take pictures of the Allied Forces cats, he described them as being free and uncontrolled, saying they were "next to impossible" to get pictures of. In the picture Sweden had already taken of China-cat, it is unclear if China-cat was on a carpeted floor or outside in grass[2]. In The Summary of the Plot until Now, he appeared to be depicted eating a dim sum dumpling[3]. When Japan-cat began his rant against the ban of canned tuna in If The World Was Cats…, China-cat agreed with his points. Additionally, like the human China, China-cat is not a member of the G8 cat group, and he also does not appreciate when he is given goods made in his own country and appears to enjoy the company of others and getting belly rubs. As opposed to China's "aru", he appears to end his sentences with "arunyan." There are not many indicators as to what his breed could be, but some have speculated that his breed is Sable Burmese, a Korat, or something else.

Denmark-cat[]

Denmark Cat

Denmark-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Denmark-cat is a large long-haired cat. He is white with ginger patches on the top of most of his tail, presumably around his entire middle from behind his front legs to about his haunches, atop his head unevenly, covering his left ear and much of that side of his head, but not appearing to be so full on the right, and under his head on the right side. The fur at the top of his head resembles a lion's mane or Denmark's hair, and it is likely he acts very similar to Denmark himself. He also has blue eyes, appears to have somewhat prominent eyebrows, and wears a Danish flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck. It is speculated that his breed is most likely a Norwegian Forest Cat.

England-cat[]

Britian Cat

England-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

England-cat is a white cat with large patches of brownish orange fur extending over much of the left side of his face, over his left hind leg and lower back, and over most of his tail. He also has green eyes, bent ears and thick lines that represent England's eyebrows. Unlike many of the other cats, he has been depicted as wearing a collar(green in the anime) around his neck with a yellow tag, which may show that he lives with England. When Finland was asked to take pictures of the Allied Forces cats, he described them as being free and uncontrolled, saying they were "next to impossible" to get pictures of, though in the photo Sweden had already taken, England-cat appeared to be resting on a pillow, again supporting that he may be England's pet[2]. His personality appears to be similar to England's as, in The Summary of the Plot Until Now, he was shown disagreeing with America-cat, saying that, if America-cat intended to have a conference, he didn't want to. He also meowed a fair amount, his cry rendered as "ma-o"[3]. England-cat also acts proper and scolds France-cat, much like the human England. However, he did not appear to have a collar in the image. Due to his bent ears, it is speculated that his breed is most likely a Scottish Fold.

Finland-cat[]

Finland Cat

Finland-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Finland-cat is a somewhat fluffy light brown cat with white paws and white at the tip of his tail, as well as at the top of his head. The white fur on his head covers half of his right eye and goes up roundly, before sharply turning down beside his left eye, also in a somewhat round shape, forming a peak-like shape with the brown fur and somewhat resembling Finland's hairstyle. In the anime, his eyes are purple. He also wears a Finnish flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck. It is speculated that his breed is a European Shorthair.

France-cat[]

France Cat

France-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

France-cat is a long-haired cat with purple eyes and white fur that looks rather wavy. In the summary of the Hetalia cats, he was drawn with sparkles around him. He's been drawn with a rose in his fur before[4], though it's absent in most images. When Finland was asked to take pictures of the Allied Forces cats, he described them as being free and uncontrolled, saying they were "next to impossible" to get pictures of. In the photo Sweden had already taken of France-cat, however, France-cat was either inside, in front of a window, or outside, in front of a door with windows on it, or simply with a window in the background[2]. He apparently has opposable thumbs as he is known to enjoy decorating his room, which is both a hobby and desire to keep his home as well kept as possible. He also shows a great sadness sadness that other houses around his own are not as well kept as his. His personality appears to be similar to France's as, he displays vanity on a level similar to France. In The Summary of the Plot until Now, he mocked the other cats for lacking elegance, and his meow was written as "ruruna-o", "le le meoow"[3]. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a Persian, a Turkish Angora, or some other long-haired cat.

Germany-cat[]

Germany Cat

Germany-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Germany-cat is a dark gray or black cat with blue eyes who wears a German flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck. He is serious, just like his human counterpart, and he even has a strict rule about his naps, lest he be punished. He was also concerned about being late to the Cat Conference and hissed at the other cats in The Summary of the Plot until Now that the meeting that day would go properly[3]. Also like Germany, he is often the first of the cats to suggest ways of solving problems but is also not afraid to call out others who are either lazy or make ridiculous suggestions. It's possible that he is one of Germany's pets, as Germany was stated to own two cats, the other cat possibly being Prussia-cat. Italy-cat says that their relationship is amusing/interesting, which is why he plays with him even though he's a male cat, though when he disturbed his nap to try and get him to play (waking him up, telling him to stop showing off and play) he greatly upset him, especially when he touched his scrotum while trying to play quietly. However, Germany-cat was quick to forgive him, his forgiving nature being something that Japan-cat liked about him. He intended to return to napping afterwards, asking if Japan-cat would join him as rest was important, however Italy-cat was noisily flirting with a female cat, causing Germany-cat to attack him. It is speculated that his breed is most likely a German Rex.

Greece-cat[]

Greece Cat

Greece-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Greece-cat is a grey and white cat with long fur and green eyes. There is a notable grey heart shape on his right flank. His front paws are white, however his back paws seem to be grey, as is the rest of him with the exception of his face, back, and half of his tail down to the base. He often has a bored or sleepy expression, like Greece himself. It is speculated that his breed is an Aegean Cat(with long fur), or possibly a Turkish Van.

Hong Kong-cat[]

Hong Kong Cat WT Ep1

Hong Kong-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Hong Kong-cat is a white cat with brown eyes, thick eyebrows, and a long, dark fur strand on the left side of his forehead resembling Hong Kong's fringe. In the manga, he appears to have two additional fur strands on either side of his face, once again resembling Hong Kong's hairstyle[5]. As he has only appeared as a floating head in the sky as China-cat talks about him, it is unknown whether Hong Kong-cat's entire body is white or if he has any markings. It can also be presumed that he is rather small and likely still a kitten, like Iceland-cat, due to his human counterpart being a teenager. It is unknown what his breed could be, but he perhaps is the same breed as China-cat.

Hungary-cat[]

Hungary Cat

Hungary-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Hungary-cat is a white cat with green eyes, a brownish patch on her right flank, three brownish stripes on her tail with the tip being entirely colored, and brownish patches atop her head that form a smooth, peak-like shape with the white portion of her fur in a way that somewhat resembles Hungary's bangs. She wears a flower under her right ear and a collar(green in the anime) around her neck that has a cross hanging from it. It is speculated that her breed is possibly a European Shorthair.

Iceland-cat[]

Iceland Cat

Iceland-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Iceland-cat is noticeably the smallest cat in the image collection of cats Himaruya posted on his blog. He is presumably a kitten, such as how Iceland himself is a teenager. Iceland-cat has purple eyes, white fur with a grey spot over his right eye, and he is wearing an Icelandic flag ribbon around his neck. He is also depicted in a basket, so it is unknown if his entire body is white or if he has any other spots. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a European shorthair.

Italy-cat[]

Italy Cat

Italy-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Italy-cat is a white cat with brown patches of fur on his head, left leg, back, and tail, Italy's closed eyes(though it can be presumed his eyes are brown), and a curl on the left side of his head. In the anime, Italy-cat was seen with different colored fur in different seasons: World Series, he had reddish/brown fur and in World Twinkle his fur changed to white, like it is in Himaruya's drawings. Personality-wise, Italy-cat is very playful and affectionate, describing himself as one of the friendliest cats there is. Just like Italy, he often takes naps and flirts with female cats regularly, though he says that he also has fun playing with Germany-cat even though he's male. His brother is Romano-cat, whom he doesn't seem to get along with, much to Russia-cat's dismay. He appears to consider Germany-cat a friend, though he did bother him and swat at his scrotum when he wanted to play while Germany-cat was trying to sleep. In The Summary of the Plot until Now, he is seen sleeping, snoring, and making the peculiar-sounding cry of "ve-nya," "ve-meow"[3]. In a blog post, when asked about names for the other Nation Cats since Japan-cat had one, Himaruya gave Italy-cat the name Gino[6]. Other than Japan-cat, he is the only cat to have an official name. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a Domestic Shorthair or a European Shorthair.

Japan-cat[]

Japan Cat

Japan-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Japan-cat is a black and white cat with a very short tail. His fur is mainly black, though his paws, his tail, and the space of his muzzle under his eyes and over his mouth down to the front of his chest are all white. His tail is black in the manga but white in other drawings. Like his human counterpart, he shares Japan's dark eyes and proper mannerisms. He is also good friends with Italy-cat and Germany-cat, and seems to along with the other cats as well, saying in The Summary of the Plot until Now that he's happy as long as he is with everyone[3]. He also really loves tuna and stood up against Monaco-cat's ban of it. He becomes quite a "demonicat" (鬼猫, oni neko) when food is concerned. While, usually, he doesn't make much noise, when Japan gave him tuna, he couldn't help but declare how delicious it was, possibly in Japanese, which shocked Japan. He is the only cat thus far who has spoken human language in front of his counterpart; having exclaimed how much he loves tuna and Japan could understand what he said. So far he also appears to be one of few cats definitively known to be acknowledged by and owned by his human counterpart. Japan-cat is also referred to as "Tama" by Japan, making him one of two cats to have an official name. Due to his short tail, it is speculated that his breed is most likely a Japanese Bobtail.

Korea-cat[]

Korea Cat (Blog Post)

Korea-cat in a blog post[1]

Korea-cat is a white cat with black or dark grey spots on his head, left flank, right paw, his back, and his tail except for the end. He shares Korea's curl, and appears to have noticeable eyebrows. He is presumably a kitten because his human counterpart is a teenager, though he is quite a large one, appearing to be even bigger than China-cat. Like France-cat, he was drawn with a few sparkles around him. As he was depicted lying on a pillow in his original drawing, he potentially may be South Korea's pet. In a blog post, Himaruya also jokingly referred to him as Kannyan (かんにゃん), a combination of Kankoku (韓国), the Japanese word for Korea, and nyan(にゃん), the Japanese onomatopoeia of meow. This was translated into English as Meowrea. In another blog post he appeared in a couple comics, where it was shown that he is just as rambunctious and loud as Korea, and also enjoys bothering China-cat. He also mentions that his owner, presumably Korea, says he is super cool and the best looking hunk in the world, and says that he is above his owner. It is unknown what his breed could be, but he possibly is a Korean Shorthair.

Monaco-cat[]

Monaco Cat

Monaco-cat in Episode 82

Monaco-cat is a long-haired cat with white fur and blue eyes, very similar to France-cat. On the left side of her head, there's a red bow tied into her fur. She also has streaks in her fur, representing Monaco's glasses. She wears a jeweled collar, whose gem is the most part visible through her thick fur. Because the neighborhood's supply of tuna was running low, she suggested a ban, however she was stopped by Japan-cat. It is speculated that her breed is the same as France-cat's because they look so similar.

Netherlands-cat[]

Ned neko HWS 243

Netherlands-cat in World☆Stars Chapter 243[7]

Netherlands-cat is potentially large, pale colored cat that wears a Dutch flag ribbon tied around his neck in the same fashion as Netherlands' scarf. He has only appeared in one World☆Stars chapter thus far, so his exact coloring is unknown, but he likely has green eyes and his fur is potentially a similar color to his counterpart's hair. In his brief appearance, he was shown visiting Japan-cat in a reference to the fact that while Japan was in isolation, the Dutch were the only Europeans permitted to stay there. It is shown that he would talk to Japan-cat from the other side of the dog door because he was too big to fit through it[7].

Norway-cat[]

Norway Cat

Norway-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Norway-cat is a large white cat with very long fur, some of it held in a ponytail over his left eye, and the same floating curl as Norway. He has indigo eyes and wears a Norwegian flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck. It is likely he can see magical creatures as Norway can, as he was drawn looking at a fairy. It is speculated that his breed is most likely a Norwegian Forest Cat.

Prussia-cat[]

Prussia Cat

Prussia-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Prussia-cat is a white cat with reddish eyes and a scar over his right eye and another over his left shoulder. Whether his coloring is meant to be a mark of albinism and whether his scar impairs his eyesight is unclear. Like Germany-cat, he wears a German flag ribbon tied in a bow around his neck, though his is torn or ribbed at on the loose ends. However, his fur appears to be somewhat longer or less neat than Germany-cat's. As with Germany and Prussia, they are brothers. It is speculated that his breed is most likely a German Rex.

Romano-cat[]

Romano Cat

Romano-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Romano-cat is a white cat with the same markings as his brother, simply colored a lighter brownish orange, and his curl comes off of the top of his head as opposed to the left side. He also does not have the closed eyes that Italy-cat has in most images, and his eyes olive-brown like Romano's. He doesn't appear to get along with his brother or Germany-cat, and is scared of Russia-cat. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a Domestic Shorthair or a European Shorthair.

Russia-cat[]

Russia Cat

Russia-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Russia-cat is a large cat with long, dark, thick fur. The fur around his neck is white, a nod to Russia's scarf, though he lacked it in Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3. He also has white fur his back paws and on the upper half of his tail. He can often be seen keeping his eyes closed in a similar manner to Italy-cat but does open them from time to time, and his eyes are purple. Like Russia, his nose appears to be rather prominent. When Finland was asked to obtain pictures of the Allied Forces cats, he described them as being free and uncontrolled thus "next to impossible" to get pictures of. However in the photo Sweden had already taken of Russia-cat, he was approaching the camera in a friendly manner, in front of what appeared to be a toy of some sort[2]. Russia-cat appears to have the same intimidating manner as Russia as the other cats become visibly nervous around him. In Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3, it is shown that he is the pet of Russia and was happy that the other cats were lively as usual. Because Russia's and Italy's bosses had been getting along, he wanted to get along with the Italy-cats as well. However, when he went to their home, he saw them fighting, and placed himself between them to put a stop to it. He became happy when he saw that they had stopped fighting, and said that it was the best when everyone's relations were good. In a Kitayume header image, he was drawn with a Russian flag ribbon tied around his neck. Belarus was once drawn rubbing his belly at a great speed[8]. In The Summary of the Plot until Now, his meow was written as "nyafufufu"/"nyahuhuhu", meowing and laughing, and he comments that everyone is so lively that day[3]. It is speculated that his breed is most likely a Siberian.

Spain-cat[]

Spain Cat

Spain-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Spain-cat is a white cat with pale brown markings on his back, flank, most of his tail, stopping shortly before the tip, and on his head, curving down between his eyes and over his ears. He wears a collar (red in the anime) with a rosary on it, and he can at times be seen balancing a tomato on his head. Similar to Spain, he is friendly and eager to assist others. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a Domestic Shorthair tabby or a European Shorthair.

Sweden-cat[]

Sweden Cat

Sweden-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Sweden-cat is a dark-colored (blueish in his color illustration) cat with longer, white fur over his chest, and a long, thin tail with the fur at the end sticking out messily. He wears a Swedish flag ribbon tied around his neck, though his is longer than the others, is not tied in a bow, and is torn or tattered at the ends. He also has curved lines under his eyes to resemble the glasses Sweden wears. He appears to have the same 'leaning over' posture and intimidating atmosphere as his human counterpart. It is speculated that his breed is possibly a European Shorthair (which originated in Sweden)

Taiwan-cat[]

Taiwan Cat (Blog post)

Taiwan-cat in a blog post[1]

Taiwan-cat is a white cat whose tail and ears are dark at the tip. Under her head are two pink flowers. Because she was depicted as resting on a pillow in the Nation Cat summary, it's possible that she is Taiwan's pet, and it is also unknown whether the rest of her body is just white or whether she has any markings. Compared to the other cats, she's rather small which indicates that, like Iceland-cat, she is probably a kitten because her human counterpart is a teenager. It is unknown what her breed is, but she potentially could be the same breed as China-cat and/or Hong Kong-cat.

Turkey-cat[]

Turkey Cat

Turkey-cat in Nekotalia Once Again

Turkey-cat is a brown cat with a Nazar-shaped mark on his left flank, a fluffy tail, and a red bandana tied around his neck. Most notably, he has a white bag over his head with large, round eye holes cut out of it and a smile drawn onto it, a parallel to Turkey's mask. It is also unknown what his face looks like. In Himaruya's sketch of him, it looks as if he is missing his front left leg, although he does have it in the anime. It is suspected that his breed is most likely a Turkish Angora, but could also possibly be a Turkish Van or Van Cat.

Ukraine-cat[]

Dodonyan (Ukraine Cat, Blog)

Ukraine-cat in a blog post[9]

Ukraine-cat is a possibly large cat with thick, fluffy, pale fur and a stripe on her head, likely to represent Ukraine's headband. Her exact coloring is unknown due to her only appearing in an uncolored sketch on Himaruya's blog. Next to her was drawn "dodonyaan", a meow in reference to the similar-sounding bouncing sound Ukraine's breasts make. It is speculated that her breed is possibly a Siberian Cat like Russia-cat, or perhaps a Kurilian Bobtail.

Trivia[]

  • The cats all speak a single language. In a New Year's comic, America-cat wondered if Toshigami, the Japanese god of the year that Japan-cat told him about, understood the cat language as Japan-cat intended to pray to him for a good new year[10].
    • It could also be that, like their human counterparts, they possibly speak their own unique language only they can understand
    • Despite all speaking one language, it's possible the cats can also speak human languages, as Japan-cat seems to have spoken Japanese when Japan gave him tuna, much to his surprise.
  • The only cats who have canonically received names so far are Japan-cat (Tama) and North Italy-cat (Gino)[6].
  • The cats seem to be the feline counterparts of their respective nations and do appear to live with them, though very few of them actually have been shown interacting with their human counterparts. So far, Japan-cat, Russia-cat, America-cat, and Korea-cat all have been seen directly interacting with or mentioning their human counterparts.
