In General About Pets and Folklore[]

Majority of pets shown are native animals and/or breeds of their homelands. A particular trait many of the pets are shown to share is that they are able to communicate with one another, but this is not often shown. Due to constant contact with their owners, the pets themselves have extended life spans, but this can be reversed if they are away from their owners for too long. This is hinted at as France has owned birds with the same name, but it could also be that it is just a popular name he's repeatedly used.

Each nation also has their own legends and folklore. On occasion, these beings can be seen in the series but a mix of the nation's either can/cannot interact with them or even believe in them. Japan was once stated to have been able to interact with the spirits of his home but eventually lost his belief in them and can no longer interact with them because of that. Britain and Norway are well known to be able to see and communicate with legendary spirits and beings of different countries which often confuses others as the two are believed to be talking to themselves.

Aerica's Orb[]

Aerican Empire is often seen together with a grey floating orb sporting a constant smiley face. Although it is currently unsure what this creature is, it is very likely either a reference to the Aerican Empire flag (which has a smiley face on it), or the fictional planet of Verden, which is part of the Aerican Empire.

The orb has been shown to have a mind of its own, namely in World☆Stars Chapter 438[1] where it is shown leaving Aerica's side unprompted in order to neutralize a UFO that was abducting Molossia's pet.

America's Cat[]

Occasionally, America is shown owning a small, fluffy white cat.

America's Whale[]

America has a pet whale that lives in a pool in his backyard. America is thought to have obtained his pet whale around the time he had convinced Japan to re-open his borders. It is noted that the Whale is fond of Lithuania.

America's Rabbit[]

America is seen with a small rabbit in some panels of the manga during his early stages of being a country. This is believed to be a pun, as the Japanese word for "rabbit" is "usagi" and America is often known as USA.

America's Unicorn[]

America was given a unicorn on his bicentennial birthday by England. The unicorn appears invisible and America seems afraid, although it is not clear if it is from the unicorn being invisible or because he does not believe in Britian's magical creatures.

America's Cheese[]

In Hetalia World Stars Chapter 381, Malaysia brought a massive sea cucumber to ASEAN meeting for cooking. Later, Thailand said that, the creature is actually America's cheese.

Australia's Koala[]

Australia has a koala that seems to be constantly glaring. The koala is seen to have a temper or bad reputation against strangers.

Note: Himaruya has suggested that Female!Australia's Koala is even more ferocious.

Bøyg[]

Norway's fairy friends that stand as a hindrance towards travelers. They only appear once when Norway tries to persuade Iceland using them, knowing that Iceland can see fairies like him.

China's Cats[]

In the Hetalia☆Collezione, it was revealed that China has four cats with the names Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Lü Bu, Sun Quan. All four of these cats are named after famous rival warlords from the Han Dynasty.

China's Panda[]

China's pet panda's name is unknown, but China almost always carries it on his back in a bamboo basket. China refers to it simply as "Panda". It is stated in notes by Himaruya that China has with him a different panda every time.

England's Cow[]

England can be seen with a cow (presumably a shorthorn, as that breed is native to England). It appears with him in some artwork, and in the strip "He loves fishing in troubled waters."

England's Rabbit[]

Younger renditions of England can be seen with a small rabbit following him around.

Flying Mint Bunny[]

The most popular of the magical creatures that only England, Norway, and Romania can see, shown to be a mint-colored bunny with small wings. It may be a reference to the popular folktale that a rabbit that lives on the moon, based on pareidolia that identifies the markings of the moon as a rabbit.

Interestingly, the name of Flying Mint Bunny in the original Japanese version can be roughly translated to Fairy.

There was a semi-canon name for the Flying Mint Bunny, which is LeeLee by Norway.

General Winter[]

The spirit of winter in Russia. He takes the form of an adult man with white hair but brown colored eyebrows, beard, and a mustache. He also wears gloves, a scarf, and military coat that is tattered at the ends. General Winter is stated to be able to cause great snowstorms that halt many armies or cause them to retreat. General Winter haunts and attacks Russia every year, which has caused him to hate the snow and long for the warm Southern sea. However, in the face of war, General Winter is his best ally. However, General Winter's effectiveness also depends if the enemy is used to cold weather or not; as Denmark, Sweden, and Prussia were not bothered by his abilities.

Germany's Dogs[]

It is revealed that Germany owns 3 dogs, by the names of Aster, Blackie, and Berlitz. Aside from the obvious German shepherd, it is unknown what breed the dogs are. The blonde dog is said to be friendly with Luxembourg's dog.

Greece's Cats[]

Greece has multiple stray cats following him around in reference to the large street cat population of Greece.  So far only one of the cats, Corporal Cat, has been named. Greece did name one of the cats Larry, but it is implied that he made it up on the spot.

Hanatamago[]

See Hanatamago.

Hong Kong's Panda[]

The same as China, Hong Kong has a liking towards live and plush pandas and appears to sell them in public.

In Prussia's Oresama No blog, Prussia states that Hong Kong offers to sell him a panda to bring good luck. Prussia in the end buys them and gets scolded by Germany. Since then, he doesn't believe in the luck of pandas and goes as far to mention it in his Mein Gott! character song.

In addition, Hong Kong has mentioned about pandas bringing good luck in his own character song, Hoi Sam☆Nice Guy.

Hutt River's Bilby[]

Hutt River appears to own a bilby but there is still no further name confirmation. The bilby made its official appearance in the It's A Pandorra Of Countries~ where it is found in Hutt River's home by Wy and the other micronations.

The bilby has also been in a Bamboo Thicket sketch alongside Hutt River and Australia.

Iceland's Puffin[]

Iceland has a puffin that is often called Mr. Puffin by fans or 'Puffin-san' (Mr. Puffin)' or simply 'Puffin' in the official Hetalia Fantasia CD series. They have been seen in the anime and manga together multiple times. The puffin is able to talk, and has been featured in Iceland's character song With love, from Iceland. The puffin speaks roughly and informally in both the Japanese and English dub. In the English, he speaks like a mafia boss.

Japan's Rabbit and Guinea pig[]

In episode 50, Japan adopted a guinea pig and rabbit when he learned of their popularity amongst the younger generations.

Japan's spirits[]

In episode 30, it is shown that Japan's home hosts a variety of ancient and mystical spirits. They reveal that they were able to speak with regular people and Japan before they started losing their belief in them and eventually had to move elsewhere. The two are often referred to as a Kappa and Youkai/Onion Head. They were shown to be friendly and courteous when they met Britain.

Kokolo[]

Cameroon is revealed to have a pet lion cub named Kokolo in his appearance in the special edition booklet of Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3. In the Halloween 2011 event, it is revealed that Kokolo is a University of Glasgow fine arts graduate.

Kumajirō[]

Canada has a polar bear named Kumajirō (くま次郎), who never remembers that his owner is named Canada. In return, Canada also forgets Kumajirō's name. They are almost never shown without the other; they appear to have been together since Canada's youth.[citation needed] Similarly to Hanatamago, Kumajirō barely grew in his lifetime due to his owner's immortality, and he is still a juvenile bear (despite Himaruya noting that his metabolism is "higher than necessary").[2]

Kumajirō is sentient much like many other creatures in Hetalia, and just like Iceland's Puffin, he has the ability to talk and be understood by his owner.

In a blog post[3] from 2015, Himaruya replies to a fan question about why Canada named his pet an obviously Japanese name,[Note 1] saying that in English the bear would be called Will-bear and that Canada would accidentally call him Tom-bear, Ben-bear, Tim-bear, or Sam-bear.

Despite what many fans initially thought, the fully grown polar bear Russia has trouble dealing with in Extra Episode 3 has never been evidenced to be Kumajirō.

Lithuania's Wolf[]

In Episode 86 parallelling The Yoke of Tartar,[4] Lithuania is shown to own a big dog that became agitated in the presence of Russia. However, a chibi sketch[5] from roughly the same period as the publishing of Volume 3 shows Lithuania posing next to what is probably the Iron Wolf from Lithuanian folklore, judging by its armored appearance matching Lithuania's description of it in The Legend of the Iron Wolf[6] and Episode 96. In The Yoke of Tartar, Russia refers to the animal as wan-chan, a childish, cutesy nickname for a dog, though that doesn't exclude the wolf possibility.

Additionally, a short character description from The Baltic States, Tripartite Talk[7] depicts Lithuania petting a large canine creature resembling wolf and similar to the dog from The Yoke of Tartar as well. Lithuania's Hetalia☆Collezione profile explicitly says that he owns a "legendary wolf" as a pet, but whether or not the animals from The Yoke of Tartar and later media are one and the same remains unknown.

Despite Lithuania currently owning the wolf as a pet, it has yet to appear in the comic proper.

Molossia's Pet[]

Molossia is shown to have a pet. When asks what kind of pet it is, he answered that it's a dog.[citation needed] However, Japan thinks of it as a different kind of creature. It appears briefly in the It's a Pandora Box of Countries! - First Part in Molossia's garden. The pet also sparks a debate among other countries and fans to try determine its exact species. It always lets out the sound Chom Chom in every appearance it had.

Netherlands' rabbit[]

Netherlands is shown to have a small white rabbit with brown spots and a heart shaped spot on its back. The rabbit is shown to be friendly toward Japan's dog but doesn't notice right away when it gets too close or affectionate with others. The rabbit does show genuine concern for Netherlands when it reveals to Pochi that Netherlands got into an argument with his sister and has become a busy body from possible loneliness. Its breed is most likely a Holland Lop. Character notes reveal that the rabbit is rather lazy and doesn't like to leave the house much. It also loves to sleep and have the base of its ears scratched.

Pien[]

Pien (often written as Pien-kun) is Philippines' pet tarsier. He is described as "a tarsier with an un-tarsier-like personality" because he loves to stand out. He is usually on Philippines' shoulder since he has come to the conclusion that he is noticed the most when he is with Philippines. Pien-kun's name may have come from the term "pien" that refers to the pleading emoji (🥺) which resembles a tarsier's face.

Pierre[]

Pierre is seen with France and is known to be his pet bird, similar to Prussia and Gilbird. It's been noted that since France seems to have various birds that look identical to one another, "Pierre" is likely a name that France uses to refer to all of the birds, and it is also stated in the anime that he has a bird named Pierre 02.

Pelutze[]

Pelutze is the dog owned by Luxembourg. Depicted as a large Labrador with thick grey fur and hazy blue eyes, it has appeared alongside Luxembourg in colored sketches of him.

Pochi[]

Usually accompanying Japan, his owner, he is a Shiba Inu dog that has a personality similar to Japan's; he does not appear comfortable when others get too close to him in terms of affection. He has been shown to communicate and interact with Netherlands' pet rabbit, asking the rabbit to "take responsibility" when he was licked by the rabbit, similarly to how Japan asked Italy to take responsibility after the latter kissed him. He also often carries Japan-cat on his back in the Nekotalia series. In a September 2013 blog post, Himaruya stated that Pochi is a regular dog, but his owner's longevity rubs off on him. If he were to be separated from Japan, he would become a normal dog and age normally.

Poland's Horses[]

In Episode 47 adapting part of Lietuvis!!,[8] Poland purchases a lot of ponies for his army, one of which (brown with a dark brown mane and a light brown stripe on its nose) he keeps as a pet. The way Poland refers to it seems to hint that it is a mare. The pony also appeared Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White, after being turned into a pictonian.

Poland is also shown riding another brown horse in Surprise Halloween!, though it's unclear how many pets he owns in the present day.

Pookie[]

A small brownish colored cat that Italy adopted in the first season of the series. According to an outburst by Germany, the cat possibly escaped from a lab. The cat is friendly to those around it with its only known act of retaliation being against Germany in the movie Paint it White. The cat can often be seen licking or rubbing against Italy affectionately.

Prussia's Bird[]

Prussia's pet bird was seen delivering the letter declaring the War of Austrian Succession to the Archduchess of Austria. The bird is frequently seen flying around or sitting on top of Prussia's head. It is also mentioned in the Oresama no Blog, where Prussia is surprised when he was informed by Italy that the bird sits on his head, showing that he was previously unaware of the bird's presence. There are some pictures by Himaruya depicting it with a hat, so it may be assumed that Prussia had taken notice of him. Prussia has been occasionally depicted with more than one of these birds, similar to France having several birds looking identical to one another. Contrary to popular belief, the bird does not have an official name. However, the English-speaking fandom refers to it as Gilbird, in reference to Prussia's human name.

Spain's turtles[]

Spain has amassed a large gathering of turtles that appear to follow him with great admiration after a law to protect them had been placed and the turtles wandered into a cafe in Italy.

Switzerland's Goats[]

Additional sketches reveal that Switzerland has three pet goats Eiger, Jungfrau ('Virgin') , and Mönch ('Monk'), named after famous Swiss mountains. They're docile but apparently have a big attitude.[9]

Tony[]

Often seen with America, Tony was found after America discovered that a UFO had crashed in New Mexico (Episode 66). Tony is able to speak English, but usually speaks rudely. (As shown in Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White) He also loves video games and making fun of America when America becomes scared of horror movies.

Toto[]

It was revealed in a blog entry Thailand has a small male elephant named Toto, whom he dotes on ridiculously to the point of it being overweight. The elephant also has a fluffy speech pattern, especially when compared to Iceland's puffin.

Norway's Troll[]

Norway has barely been seen with a troll in the manga. It has been believed it is Norway's friend or companion, similar to England's Flying Mint Bunny. Its name is unknown, and most fans simply refer to it as Troll.

Wy's Rabbit[]

Wy has an albino rabbit, which she is seen holding while in her garden. The rabbit appears to be very loyal to her due to it following after her when she confronts Sealand.

Notes[]

  1. In Japanese, Jirō (次郎) can either be a given name by itself or used together with other kanji. Names ending with -jirō are often used to describe a generic, ordinary character.
