Canada and Cuba's relationship together can seem rather dysfunctional at times, but when not being beaten on by him in the place of America, Canada gets along rather well with Cuba. After their first disasterous meeting (which involved Cuba beating Canada up after mistaking him for America), Cuba sought him out again and offered him a tub of ice cream as a peace offering between the two of them, then invited him to come over to his house. However, when Canada came over, he was again mistaken for America and harassed. During the 2010 Christmas event, upon learning that other nations were going missing one by one, called up Canada to check on him and suggest they stick together until the fiasco blew over. Later on, instead of making an effort to find the missing others, they spent their time taking silly pictures of themselves and Kumajirou.

In 2007 and 2008, Himaruya gave names to some characters. Canada received the name Matthew (sometimes spelled Matthieu or Mathieu in a French sense) Williams.

Appearance

Full Article: Uniform Guide: Canada

Canada's appearance frequently causes identity confusion between him and his brother America, but numerous differences can still be made apparent. His hair is lighter blond, wavy and slightly longer than America's. He apparently inherited it from France. He also has an unique ahoge that starts near the top of his head and loops down once to hang over his face (it is unknown if it acts as an erogenous zone like North and South Italy's). His complexion is rather fair. Iconically, he's shown wearing a long beige Canadian Armed Forces parka, boots and snow goggles. He wears glasses that represent Quebec, Canada's only officially French province and known as the part of him that would be the easiest to seperate.

Character summary

Canada is a very shy nation compared to the others, and his soft voice and inability to speak up render him virtually "invisible" to the others. He's very easily looked over by the other nations. He's commonly mistaken for America, although it's usually immediately apparent that he's not due to his quiet and passive-aggressive personality - the opposite of America's. He's rather peaceful and sensitive as well. Canada loves things like maple syrup and hockey, and is said to speak French, as references to Canadian preferences. He's usually portrayed as intelligent and gentle. When he attempts to stand up for himself, it's normally well-rehearsed and respectful, though it's rather easy to intimidate him into silence. However, he can eventually be infuriated after enough provocation to argue for hours on end, listing everything wrong with his rival (he once did so against America, to which his brother was baffled and could only respond with tears), though most of the time he'll simply fume quietly before giving up.

Canadiaaaa

Canada

Canada owns a small polar bear cub named Kumajiro, whose name he can never remember exactly. In turn, Kumajirou can never remember Canada's name, often asking "Who are you?", to which Canada will reply "I'm Canada...!". In the English dub of the anime, Canada himself seemed to forget his own exact identity at times, referring to himself as "Canadia".

France and England raised Canada in turn throughout his childhood and adolescence. Both France and England paid more attention to America while raising them, and when first introduced to his brother, America quickly became bored with him. However, France can recognize Canada under most circumstances and America offered him help dealing with his French-vs-English-population-clashing crisis. He's also constantly abused by certain nations (namely Cuba ) who mistake him for America, to which Canada is too afraid to confront him about.

Some Canadian stereotypes he portrays include: a quiet politeness, his shy personality, a tendency to end his sentences with "eh?" (in the English dub), his near obsession with maple-related products and winter sports, him being thought to be American, having next to no influence over American affairs (which affect him nearly as much), etc.

Relationships

America

BALL TO THE FAAAAACE

Canada during a game of baseball with America

America and Canada grew up separately and with little communication between the two up until when England introduced his two colonies. America then quickly grew bored with his brother and wandered off, much to Canada's dismay, and forgot about him very quickly. Later on, the two started communicating more, although Canada's identity was still the cause of many problems. Some nations began bashing on Canada or trying to talk to him thinking he was America. However, Canada's timid personality usually means that what follows is a slightly panicked claim of him not being America and then silently cursing his brother. If not mistaken for America himself, he would sometimes be dubbed as "one of his lackeys". This caused Canada to become a little bit frustrated with his brother. He would normally be too afraid to speak up, but America was the one to finally break him into ranting about everything wrong with America for three hours straight, reducing the latter to tears.

But despite all of the sibling confusion and possible rivalry, Canada and America seem to have a healthy relationship. They spend a good deal of time together and are normally there for the other during times of crisis to offer consonance and advice.

They can be paired together incestuously as AmeCan (or some variation thereupon).

Cuba

Angryyy Cuba

Cuba mistaking Canada for America

Canada and Cuba's relationship together can seem rather dysfunctional at times, but when not being beaten on by him in the place of America, Canada gets along rather well with Cuba. After their first disasterous meeting (which involved Cuba beating Canada up after mistaking him for America), Cuba sought him out again and offered him a tub of ice cream as a peace offering between the two of them, then invited him to come over to his house. However, when Canada came over, he was again mistaken for America and harassed. During the 2010 Christmas event, upon learning that other nations were going missing one by one, Cuba called up Canada to check on him and suggest they stick together until the fiasco blew over. Later on, instead of making an effort to find the missing others, they spent their time taking silly pictures of themselves and Kumajirou.

Because of their moments as listed above and their modern-day friendship, they can be paired together as Cuba/Canada.

Kumajirou

Canada seems to have owned Kumajirou since they were both young, and he has aged gradually with his owner over all their years together. But despite their long history, they still often remain confused over the other's name - Kumajirou often asking Canada "Who are you?", and Canada making an effort (and failing) to say his name correctly, instead coming up with a random name starting with "K". Canada is also shown to find Kumajirou very cute, once even being captivated for an entire weekend by his eyelashes, which he found adorable. Kumajirou has also been shown to care for his owner, offering to help him out during the Christmas Santa shortage fiasco. He even accompanies Canada in evey one of his forms, being the Nyotalia one, 2p! male or female version, etc.

AU (Alternate Universe) Versions

NOTE: A great deal of the information surrounding the AU versions of this character are purely fanon ideas - headcanons, if you will. Little official information has been given on the alternate universes; please do not believe any of the details not stated to be confirmed as canon to be official.

Nyotalia/Genderswapped (Nyo!)

Fem Canada Chibi

Nyo! Canada's official design

Voiced by: Kasumi Nakamura (seiyū)

Despite not being in the I Was Overwhelmed with Heroines strip, nyo! Canada is to appear in the upcoming Beautiful World episode. Himaryua has stated that he likes the name Marguerite, or Meg in short form, Williams for her, though a commonly given fan name would be Madeline, or Maddie (chosen because of its similarity to "Mattie", an abbreviation of "Matthew") Williams. She has the appearance of a younger girl with long, darker blonde, slightly curly pigtails tied with bows and accessorized with two pink maple leaf-shaped clips and a red beret. Her eyes are the same shade of violet as nyo! France's and she wears glasses, like her male version. Her outfit consists of a professional-looking navy shirt like nyo! France's, but with a matching skirt, a red maple leaf-patterned hoodie and lower light brown boots. Her equivalent of Kumajirou looks virtually the same but with a small, light pink flower in her fur. The female Kumajirou's name is Kumarie. Nyo! Canada is normally seen only with maple syrup.

Canada's female counterpart is said to be equally as shy but extremely mild-mannered and polite. She's normally shown to be babied by nyo! France and doesn't seem to get along as well with her world's America and the male versions do. Kumarie is also rumored to be scarier than Kumajirou. Fans normally portray the female Canada as even more timid than the male version and a lot more passive-aggressive, even when pushed far. She's also normally given more opportunities to demonstrate her intelligence by the others.

Second Player/Another Color (2p!)

Fem 2p Canada Chibi

Canada's original 2p! design

Despite being one of the few characters who were given an official design, 2p! Canada has not been very celebrated in the fandom. However, the male OC version was very well-recieved and remains one of the most popular Second Players to date. 2p! Canada's chibi illustrations show her with hair that is a light blonde and let down rather than put up in two pigtails, and is clipped back on one side by a large red maple leaf-shaped pin. She wears a red Canadian Mountee's uniform with a short black skirt and also keeps her glasses. The male version appears rather scraggly, with his blond hair messily tied back into a ponytail and having bags under his eyes, as well as being unshaven. The wears a Mountee's uniform or a red lumberjack shirt, and his version of Kumajirou is a large, rabid polar bear. They're often shown with a barbed wire hockey stick or a cigarette.

Because of his popularity in the fandom, the male 2p! Canada has a very developped character. With next to no canon leads to his personality, 2p! Canada is normally shown to be cold and irritable, and to just hate people in general. He doesn't take well to being forgotten, and is not hesitant to beat those who insult him, piss him off, or poach on his land illegally within an inch of their life. However, he can still be shown as compassionate when trying to help others, and is often depicted having a soft spot for his First Player. The female version is hardly ever recognized by fans, though she appears to have a similar personality. Their names are often said to be MattieuMatt or James/Madison or Marguerite Williams.
